MIDDLEMORE ED POINT OF CARE ULTRASOUND (MED-PoCUS)

Point of care ultrasound (PoCUS) has been shown to enhance the Emergency Physicians ability to assess and manage patients with a variety of acute illnesses.
Utilisation of ultrasound in the Emergency Department must be done in a safe and structured manner. ED users must undertake a credentialed learning pathway (including formative and summative assessments), and also demonstrate on-going maintenance of their skills.
MED-PoCUS is an independent learning platform developed by Middlemore ED Education and Ultrasound Departments, for the purpose of providing resources and a guide for ACEM Emergency Medicine trainees working at Middlemore Hospital and in the Auckland Region. Links to external validated formative courses and modules are included, these are a requirement for your credentialed learning.
ACEM LEARNING
The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) will be incorporating specific knowledge and learning requirements for ultrasound in Fellowship examinations. Such curriculum requirements will include:
Basic principles of ultrasound physics
Ultrasound machine controls (Knobology) and image optimisation
Bio-effects, safety, infection control, and machine maintenance
Performance, anatomy, utilisation, interpretation, and clinical incorporation, for specific focused modules-
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)
Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (eFAST)
Focused Echo in Life Support (FELS)
Focused Lung Ultrasound
